I bought my first road bike in 2006 as a way to stay active during grad school. I had spent the previous two years cross country ski racing on the national circuit, and was convinced I needed to find a new sport to pursue in a "low key" fashion. But, before I knew it, my competitive instinct kicked in, and I was back to trying to squeeze in as many training hours as possible around my microbiology research and heading to as many fun races as possible.

I love the fact that I ride more miles on an average morning than many of my classmates travel in a week, and amuse myself on long training rides by composing bad haiku.

When off the bike and not in lab, I like to cook and bake, and head north to hike up mountains or to cross country ski as often as the racing and training schedule allows.
